With a design process rooted in a “less is more philosophy”, and a desire to combine luxurious textiles and modern design with artisanal craftsmanship, designer Kelsey Adair started Bare Knitwear in 2014 after a life changing trip to Peru. While working with artisan groups in the Peruvian Andes, she learned the intricacies of traditional craftsmanship, the beauty of sustainable fibers and realized the role Bare Knitwear could play in empowering artisan communities.
Kelsey’s intentionally minimal and thoughtful designs are produced using natural, undyed fibers, resulting in heirloom quality pieces that are understated and elegant. Working only with Peruvian businesses who prioritize the well-being of people and the planet, each piece is ethically produced using wool that is certified mulesing-free from suppliers that hold Responsible Wool Standard and Responsible Alpaca Standard certification granted by the Textile Exchange.
Bare Knitwear’s proudest achievement of all is the personal relationships the brand has forged with their partners who employ and empower local Peruvian artisans. Over time Bare has witnessed the difference quality employment can bring to a community, providing sustainable employment for local artisans and the opportunity for them to have true autonomy over their futures. Kelsey is proud to connect two worlds and believes that each garment they produce tells a story of past and present.
